A36 is an American standard specification for carbon structural steel (ASTM A36/A36M), primarily intended for plates, shapes, and bars in bolted, riveted, or welded construction such as bridges and buildings. Steel strip for tooling, springs, or shims is typically supplied under different, more specific standards (e.g., ASTM A109 for cold-rolled carbon steel strip, or spring steel grades).
